Piedmont Triad Farmers Market

Piedmont Triad Farmers Market

So, I decided to hit the farmers market this week.  It seemed like a good peak time to feature some great local produce and share a few recipes that are great for summer picnics or any occasion.

The Piedmont Triad Farmers Market in Greensboro NC is a great place to go where many NC farms come to sell their goods!  I was able to procure some amazing peaches, watermelon, green beans, corn, potatoes, and my new favorite German Johnson tomatoes.

Thanks to my friend and neighbor Joe Hooper (who introduced me to them last summer) I’m able to appreciate these beauties!

The German Johnson comes from the German family of tomatoes which hail from Mennonite farms in the South, and they flourish in North Carolina’s summertime heat and humidity.  The perfect blend of acidity, sweetness, and tartness just takes tomato recipes to a whole other level.  But, if you’re looking for simplicity, a fat slice by itself with just a little salt and pepper is amazing!  You just can’t beat a July ripe German Johnson.

Whenever you have the chance, I can’t recommend fresh local produce enough!  Get out and support your local farmers and take your favorite recipe to the next level!
